This piece is an authentic Thai temple rubbing. These pieces were produced by local artists rubbing the temple marble reliefs with charcoal or colored chalk on rice paper or mulberry paper. The art of rubbing was banned by the government in the 1960’s to preserve the marble reliefs in the temple.
The key to understanding Thai culture is the country’s national epic: the Ramakien. This myth has its roots in the Hindu epic poem known as the Ramayana, a story recounting the age-old struggle between Good and Evil.
Temple walls in Bangkok and Cambodia are covered in marble reliefs depicting scenes from the legend of The Ramakien. Characters and scenes from the Ramakien are depicted in the rubbings.
