This entirely unique Santa figurine embodies Americas storied enjoyment for the Christmas holiday. This ceramic St. Nick depicts a torrid time in American history, with it's own interesting Christmas lore: during the Civil War, celebrating Christmas was frowned upon and even fined in Massachusetts, where it was thought an unnecessary expense and a majority of Puritans and Lutherans thought of it as a day of fasting. Many others would celebrate, however, from the Confederacy, to Union soldiers decorating Christmas Trees with salt pork and hardtack; famous political cartoonist Thomas Nast even memorializing conciliatory sentiment towards the end of the war with a cartoon of Abraham Lincoln inviting Confederate soldiers into a warm festive lodge. Christmas was even granted official Federal Holiday status in 1870 by Ulysses S. Grant, as a means of uniting the North and South. The Santa figurine, produced by Duncan Royale as Collectors Edition #09169 of 10000 made, is 12 inches tall, 5 inches wide, and hand painted the bold red, white, and blue of the American Flag.
